Most people arrive in pain, unable to do the things they love.
Some want the chance to get that life back. Others simply want to live a pain-free life. Both are reasonable. When a hip or knee starts to fail it takes something from every part of your life, and most people are anxious by the time they sit down in front of me. That is where my job starts: listening. More often than not, the story you tell me holds the diagnosis. The examination and the scans are there to confirm it.
I treat hips and knees, nothing else, and I have spent my career on the two problems above: keeping a younger hip going, and replacing a joint that arthritis has worn out. You will get your options in plain English, including the option not to operate yet.
What I enjoy most about treating patients privately is being able to deliver care that is not restricted by waiting lists, to the highest standard, in two of the best private facilities in the country.
I never leave a question unanswered. If one occurs to you afterwards, Lucie will always pass it on.

Where can I see Mr Berwin?
I consult at two private hospitals in Bath: The Bath Clinic on Claverton Down Road (BA2 7BR) and Sulis Hospital at Peasedown St John (BA2 8SQ). Both are listed above with directions, and Lucie can advise which is easier for you.
How much does a consultation cost?
A new consultation is £250 and a follow-up is £125. If you are paying for yourself, Lucie will set out all costs clearly before anything is booked. If you are insured, your policy determines what you pay.
What happens in a consultation?
You will get a short questionnaire about your hip or knee before we meet, then thirty minutes together: your story, a focused examination, and a recent X-ray, repeated if yours is out of date. We agree a plan, and everything is written up in a letter that goes to you and your GP.
How soon could I have surgery?
Typically about six weeks from your first consultation to your operation. That varies with the time of year and with demand, so ask Lucie for the current wait when you book.
What insurance do you accept?
I am recognised by the major private medical insurers, including those shown above. If yours is not among them, ask Lucie and she will check for you.
How long would I be in hospital?
For hip and knee replacement we run an enhanced recovery programme: some patients go home the same day, and most go home the day after surgery. Keyhole (arthroscopy) procedures are day cases, so you go home the same day.
When could I drive and work again?
You must be able to perform an emergency stop safely before you drive. As a guide: around six weeks after hip arthroscopy or a hip or knee replacement, and four to six weeks after knee arthroscopy, sooner for desk-based work. Recovery differs from person to person, and we will agree what is right for you before you go home.
